Canals is a town located in the south of the province of Valencia, in the La Costera region. It is very well connected by train to Valencia, with trains every 30 minutes. In addition, from the Xativa train station, you can access medium-distance trains to the main cities of Spain.
Nearby are the A-7 highway that comes from the north of the country through the Mediterranean area (Barcelona, Tarragona, Castellón and Valencia) and reaches the south of the country (Murcia, Almería, etc.) and the A-35 highway, heading to Alicante, Albacete and Madrid.
The climate: although its climate is Mediterranean, being far from the coast and located between valleys, the summers are hotter and the winters colder than in coastal towns. In summer it is quite common for Canals, along with Xàtiva, to record maximum temperatures in the area.
Local festivals: from January 16 to 18, the patron saint festivities of San Antonio Abad take place in Canals, declared of National Tourist Interest and of Regional Tourist Interest. The best known of the festivities is the burning of one of the largest bonfires in the world (18 meters high and 14 meters in diameter). About 80 tons of firewood provided by the town's residents are used for its preparation. In addition, other activities are carried out, such as the parade of floats and troupes, concerts, processions or masses, among others. On the third day, the "Dels Parells" festival is celebrated, in which the animals are blessed and the parade is held in which the revelers distribute gifts and toys through the streets of the town. At the end of the day it is customary to taste one of the town's typical dishes: baked rice.
During one of the weekends in September the fair is held, where a multitude of events are held, among the most famous are paellas and costumes.
Among the illustrious residents of the town are Pope Calixto III, born in the year 1378 in the La Torre neighborhood, and Ricardo Tormo, born in 1952, twice world motorcycling champion and several times Spanish motorcycling champion. .
Most of the surface of the municipality is flat, with a small area to the south that goes into the Serra Grossa, on the edge of the neighboring town of Ollería. The Cáñoles River runs through its municipal area as does the Los Santos River, a tributary of the Cáñoles, which originates in the neighboring town of Alcudia de Crespins.
It is believed that the town was founded around the year 1240. Thanks to the fertile lands of the municipality and its privileged location, next to the Cáñoles River and the Los Santos River, it was very important during Muslim domination.
