The old Monastery of Otero de las Dueñas was founded in 1240 by Doña María Núñez de Guzmán, although it is not classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest, it does appear as an inventoried site in the Heritage catalogue of the Diputación de León.
It is one of the architectural treasures of our area, located in a place that enjoys the harmony of the León mountains and the green pastures near the border with Asturias. Very close to the Duerna motorway and perfectly communicated in a strategic way to attract visitors from many parts of Spain.
The dynastic origins of the founder meant that the monastery of Otero de las Dueñas was born with a large dowry of inheritances and rights and with a documentary collection considered to be the most important early medieval noble archive of the Astur period in Spain.
The history of the monastery is full of incidents. It was created under the Cistercian order, but soon disputes arose with the Cistercian monastery of Gradefes, which demanded that the monastery of Otero should be under its jurisdiction.
In the revolution of 1868, the nuns who lived there were violently expelled from the monastery and the monastery and properties were seized.
Nowadays, both the land on which it stands and the building are an opportunity for investors who intend, through its restoration, to recover a "jewel" of Leonese architecture, restoring and giving a new life to those rooms that housed María Núñez, daughter of Queen Doña Urraca, wife of D. Fernando II.
The aim of this project is to recover solid but centenary structures, to renew services related to the environment, as well as to provide wealth to the surroundings through the influx of quality visitors.
But all of this is based on the conservation of the environment, which is integrated with the equine livestock of the area, taking advantage of its facilities, both as an equestrian centre for jumping and learning sports, as well as a place of health that offers its thermal waters that provide a thermal rest tourism.

It is bordered to the north by Viñayo, to the south by Benllera, to the east by Carrocera and to the west by Canales.
The Counts Fruela Muñoz and Pedro Flaínez lived there and formed a noble heritage in the Asturian mountains (854-1048), being custodians of very important documentation of our history and tenants of this marvellous building.
The importance of this monastery is due to the fact that it is one of the oldest and most important documentary collections in Asturias.
The zeal and perseverance of the counts and their descendants in the custody of this rich documentary heritage was admirable until the monastery was closed in 1868, and was unparalleled at such an early date in Spain and even in Europe. Even more interesting is the fact that there is no record that the religious institution suffered at any time from ancient looting, fires, destruction, etc. (not even the disentailment seriously affected it), which helped the survival over time of such a rich collection.
