Los Alcazares is the youngest municipality in the Region of Murcia. It is located on the shores of the Mar Menor, in the plain known as Campo de Cartagena. It has two protected areas: a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area for Birds. It has a population of around 17,000 inhabitants.
It offers seven kilometres of beach, which can be enjoyed for more than 300 days of sunshine a year, with an average annual temperature of 19 ºC and a different sea, thanks to its waters containing a high concentration of salts and iodine, which make them medicinal. Its promenade is 5.5 km long and runs along the 7 beaches of the town: Las Salinas, Los Narejos, Las Palmeras, El Espejo, Manzanares, Carrión and Las Concha. Los Alcázares has one of the best areas in Europe for water sports. In fact, numerous national and international competitions take place in the municipality. Close to the beach is the La Serena professional golf course, with 18 holes and wide, undulating greens. It was designed by Manuel Piñero, a professional golfer who won national and international titles. The terrain is flat with water hazards and thanks to being next to the sea, it enjoys a unique microclimate whose sea breeze guarantees an ideal temperature during the summer and winter months. For shopping, Los Alcázares has two weekly markets throughout the year: Tuesdays in Los Alcázares and Saturdays in Los Narejos. There is also the "Real de la Feria" promenade, a place with shops, cafés and restaurants. In Los Narejos is located the Centro Comercial El Balneario, the most international area of Los Alcázares, where you can find Indian, Italian, Asian food or the typical "fish & chips" in a British style pub.
In summer there are numerous craft markets and in the northern part of the town there is the largest one next to the funfair, with more than 50 stalls.
Los Alcázares offers its visitors and inhabitants the possibility of taking a number of free guided tours, available from September to June: a boat trip on the Mar Menor (getting to know the islands that make up the salt lagoon and their stories), a tourist train, an urban art bike route (a pleasant ride to get to know more than 160 murals by local, national and international artists), a visit to the Los Alcázares air base and its aeronautical museum, a pirate route (activity for children between 3 and 10 years old) or a visit to the protected space La Hita (various natural habitats for migratory birds).
Los Alcázares is the oldest settlement on the Mar Menor and its name has dominated this corner for more than 800 years. Inhabited in Roman times, a grandiose maritime villa was built with thermal baths (hot, warm and cold water baths), a bathing area in the sea, marble columns, mosaics, etc. During the Arab occupation, taking advantage of the ruins of the Roman villa, numerous cisterns and wells were built. In the 13th century, Alfonso X the Wise conquered the Muslim kingdom of Murcia and began the distribution of its lands. The territory of Los Alcázares came to belong to the Crown of Castile and the Council of Murcia, and these lands were colonised by people from Catalonia, Aragon and Castile. In any case, the entire Mar Menor region was sparsely populated in these centuries - incursions by pirates and soldiers from the neighbouring Muslim kingdom of Granada - with the exception of Los Alcázares, which functioned as a supply port for the city of Murcia and a pasture area.
